Frosinone were relegated in last-gasp
drama in Serie A on Sunday, joining bottom side Salernitana and
second-bottom Sassuolo in dropping to the second tier.
With the clock running down on their last game of the season,
Frosinone looked like they were going to stay up despite being
1-0 down against relegation rivals Udinese, with fellow battlers
Empoli being held 1-1 at home by AS Roma.
But Empoli's M'Baye Niang scored a winner deep into
stopage-time, ensuring the Tuscan side's safety and condemning
Frosinone to a return to Serie B.
Atalanta, meanwhile, celebrated winning the Europa League last
week by crushing Torino 3-0 thanks to goals by Ademola Lookman,
Gianluca Scamacca
and Mario Pasalic.
The win ensures that the Bergamo side will finish in the top
four, meaning Italy won't have a sixth team in next season's
Champions League and dashing sixth-placed Roma's hopes of a slot
in Europe's premier club competition.
Roma will take part in the Europa League as will seventh-placed
Lazio after they earned the point they needed to qualify with a
1-1 home draw with Sassuolo.
Atalanta will leapfrog Juventus and finish third if they beat
Fiorentina in the match they have in hand next weekend.
Napoli's woeful title defence ended with a goalless draw with
Lecce which means they finish 10th and don't qualify for
European football next season.
