Three people died as a result of extreme weather in the central-northern region of Tuscany on Thursday night as Storm Ciaran continued to work its way down the country.
The victims were an 84-year-old woman who died after having a bad turn while shoveling water from her home and an 85-year-old man found lying in water in his flooded house, both in Montemurlo near Prato northwest of Florence.
Another person was reported to have died in Rosignano near the Tuscan port city of Livorno.
In addition, on Friday morning six people were said to be missing: three in the Florence metropolitan area, one in Campi Bisenzio near Prato and two in Lamporecchio near Pistoia.
The ground floor of the Lotti hospital in Pontedera between Florence and Livorno was also flooded, leading to the suspension of surgery and dialysis.
Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani has declared a state of emergency and schools were closed in many areas.
The River Arno, which runs through Tuscany, is expected to reach a peak in Pisa before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at nearby Marina di Pisa around midnight on Friday.
