A row has erupted in Italy over a
gala industrialists' evening in Verona at which young women were
dressed as tables offering champagne to guests, in an allegedly
sexist incident.
Verona Deputy Mayor and Gender Equality Councillor Barbara
Bissoli wrote to the president of the local industrial zone
consortium, Matteo Gasparato, complaining about "an
objectification of women that fuels a misogynistic and
patriarchal culture which, with great effort, we are striving to
eliminate".
The case recalls that, perhaps more serious, of a pastry buffet
at a Sardinian hotel in August featuring as centrepiece a woman
in a swimming costume covered in chocolate, which was also
blasted as objectifying the female figure.
A photo of the woman posted on social media by a Milanese
manager staying at the Voi Colonna Hotel at Golfo Aranci went
viral spurring indignant comments.
"I'm literally gobsmacked when I look at this scene," said the
manager.
"What do the Alpitour managers think of this representation of
the female body?
My 14-year-old daughter said: 'Dad, how disgusting, this is not
a country where women can achieve things'."
