Franco Moschino was a famous Italian designer. He died at his villa in Brianza, Italy, in 1994, of a heart attack following complications from an abdominal tumour.

He founded his namesake couture line in 1983 intending to express dressing as something that should always be fun. Every collection of the Moschino fashion brand is punctuated by the signature wit of the label.
Initially, Franco Moschino designed jeans and casual wear. With time, his fashion brand expanded to designing shoes, evening wear, lingerie, perfumes, and menswear. His designs were both very unusual and innovative.
Some of his designs include a quilted jacket that has bottle tops for decoration, bodices that are made out of safety pins, drop earrings made out of plug-sockets, a quilted mini skirt made out of black denim with its hemline decorated with plastic eggs, just to mention a few. Some people referred to him as the Jean-Paul Gaultier of Italian fashion. However, even though both were highly innovative in their designs, they had different styles. Jean-Paul Gaultier experimented with different shapes and fabrics while Franco Moschino used traditional methods and basic forms.
Moschino has a simple logo design. The logo is comprised of the full name of the brand in pure bold letters. The colour of the logo varies depending on needs. They usually change between black, gold, and red.
After Franco Moschino’s death, his former assistant, Rossella Jardini, took over as Moschini’s creative director. In 1999, the designer brand became part of the Aeffe fashion group.
The Moschino brand has expanded over the years and now consists of several labels. There is Moschino, which is the main line for men’s and women’s clothing. The other label is Love Moschino, formerly known as Moschino Jeans from 1986 to 2008, which is the men’s and women’s diffusion line. Another label is Moschino Cheap and Chic, which was created in 1988, and is the women’s secondary line. The brand also sells jewellery, accessories, cosmetics and perfumes, watches, and even jet helmets. Moschino Cheap and Chic was consolidated in 2014 into Boutique Moschino, a new secondary line for women.
Rossella Jardini was the creative director at Moschino for 19 years up to October 2013. Jardini maintained Franco Moschino's philosophical and stylistic approach and was responsible for the image and style of the brand. Jeremy Scott was the next Moschino creative director, taking over in 2013. His first Moschino collection was shown in 2014.
Moschino SpA, the company that owns Moschino labels, was acquired by Aeffe SpA and Sportswear International SpA, which later changed its name to SINV HOLDING SpA in 2006. Moschino SpA was acquired in 1999. The company conducts Moschino’s licensing agreement activities, brand management, communication and autonomous coordination of commercial policies.
Moschino started distributing and franchising its products to the People’s Republic of China, excluding Macau and Hong Kong, in 2007 after an exclusive agreement between the company and con Scienward International Holdings Limited was signed. The agreement spanned over ten years where 40 stores were to be opened within the ten years the two companies were collaborating. Also, 22 of the 40 stores were to be opened within the first five years of collaboration. Within this period, there would also be the exclusive distribution of clothing lines of the Moschino brand.
In the same year, Moschino SpA announced the development and the distribution of the new Moschino Eyewear collection worldwide. This was made possible after Moschino SpA partnered up with Allison in a five-year renewable agreement for the creation of the eyewear collection. Moschino SpA signed another five-year agreement that was renewable for another five years with Binda Group. This agreement made it possible for Moschino to market and manufacture watches. This agreement saw to it that for the very first time, the jewellery collection was licensed with Moschino Cheap and Chic brand.
Also that year, the Moschino fashion brand, in collaboration with Max Safety Fashion helmet, presented the new collection of Moschino Helmets to the world during the EICMA show. These were helmets that were to be used by motorcyclists.
In late 2008, Moschino SpA and Atlana SpA, both of which are leading companies in the children’s clothing sector, announced that they would be in collaboration to create, develop, and distribute Moschino’s boys’ and girls’ collections. The agreement was for five years, renewable for an additional five years. Moschino was to control the creative aspect of the collection. The collections were aimed at three age groups: Moschino Baby, for babies between the ages of 1-3 months and two years, Moschino Kid, for children aged between 12-18 months and six years, and Moschino Teen, for children aged between six years and fourteen years.
Moschino incorporates items such as shower curtains and trash bags in their fashion. This has been evident since the beginning of the brand. Their designs exude extravagance, character and attitude. The brand is very original in the materials that it uses. In their exhibitions, it is not surprising to see models walking down the runway in dresses whose fabric is made of trash bags, fashion accessories made of garbage cans, and even a hat made from a bicycle wheel. This shows how dynamic Moschino is in its designs.
Apart from designing outfits, Moschino also designs perfumes. In November 2014, the fashion brand designed a Teddy Bear perfume. The perfume was known as Moschino toy. The perfume and the bottle were placed within the teddy bear. To use the perfume, you would have to take the detachable head of the teddy bear off first. The bear had a shirt on saying “This is not a Moschino toy.” This design was similar to what Franco Moschino used to do. He loved to use toys in his designs, showing how the brand follows its founder’s vision.
In 2014, Moschino collaborated with Coca-Cola. Jeremy Scott, the creative designer, came up with three can designs. One design of the can was a black and white cow print, another was designed to look like a vision test, and the other had pink hearts that represent the colourful legacy of the famous Italian fashion brand. All the cans also had the brand’s name on the cans. The collaboration was known as Coca-Cola loves Moschino. The Coca-Cola loves Moschino limited edition was introduced to the public at the Milan Fashion Week.
In 2016, Moschino showed the world how innovative and irreverent its approach to fashion is. The brand had a chandelier as a part of their fashion collection. They had their runway walk as a ruined baroque palace. The brand had a chandelier dress that captured everyone’s attention. The design made it evident that Moschino does not view fashion the same way that other fashion brands do.
In the same year, the company got into trouble with the pharmaceutical industry. Even though everyone was already used to the fashion brand’s eccentric style, and that anything can be expected from them, their 2016 collection presented in New York created a lot of controversy and criticism because it focused on medicines. One of the most controversial items from their collection was a clutch bag that looked identical to a pillbox. There was also a postman bag that resembled a pill bottle. There were also T-shirts and bags covered in pills. This was meant to be a form of anti-drug campaign of saying no to drugs. Due to the criticism, the brand was forced to withdraw the majority of their collection.
Moschino also created a fashion line inspired by Mcdonald’s. The designs featured Mcdonald’s sign and colours. The fashion line includes T-shirts, bags, among other accessories. On the runway, one gown was patterned in the black text of an ingredient label with nutrition facts written across the front. They also had a red suit with a yellow trim that looked like a high fashion form of a Mcdonald's uniform.
