Carabinieri ex General Mario Mori on Tuesday said he had received notice that he was under investigation in connection with Mafia bombings at art and religious sites that killed 10 people and injured 40 more in Rome, Florence and Milan in 1993.
Mori, former head of the ROS special branch and the SISDE external intelligence service, now AISE, said he had got the news on his 85th birthday.
"On the day of my 85th birthday, I received, from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Florence, a notice of guarantee with an invitation to appear in order to be interrogated as a suspect for the crimes of massacre, mafia association and association for the purposes of international terrorism and subversion of the democratic order", he said.
The Florence bombing of an agrarian institute near the Uffizi Gallery killed five people.
Cabinet secretary Alfredo Mantovano said he was "dismayed" at the probe while Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, who is in charge of the Carabinieri, said on X: "A new investigation has been opened against General Mario Mori for the Mafia massacres of 1993. Of 1993!!! Mafia massacres!!! One could not be satisfied with having made his life an ordeal for decades; one could not accept the fact that he was acquitted of all charges...".
