A central Rome hotel was evacuated on
Tuesday due to suspected toxic fumes, local police said.
Police and firefighters have closed a section of the street the
hotel is situated on, via Rasella, not far from the Trevi
Fountain.
The police said five people had received hospital treatment
after breathing in the fumes at the Hotel Barberini.
The most serious are a 60-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman
taken to the ER in code red but not in a life-threatening
condition.
In all eight people were overcome by the fumes, suffering
burning in their eyes and unable to breathe.
The cause was said to have been a faulty mixture of chlorine
used in the hotel spa.
