(ANSAmed) - PALERMO, MAY 11 - Over 200 migrants who had
remained on the Favaloro pier on the island of Lampedusa, where
they would have had to spend the night, were transferred before
sunrise to the hotspot.
A strong levant wind is blowing on the island, which on Tuesday
morning prevented the arrival of the ferry that was supposed to
transfer some of the more than 1,000 migrants at the reception
centre to Porto Empedocle.
The wind is preventing the quarantine ship "Allegra" to dock at
Cala Pisana, while a group of 17 migrants was intercepted off
the coast of Lampedusa by the Italian Coast Guard, which is
escorting the vessel to the port.
At the current time the Lampedusa hotspot guarantees lodging and
assistance to 1,725 people.
The prefecture of Agrigento has planned the transfer of 80
migrants on Tuesday evening with the commercial ferry Cossydra,
which will reach Porto Empedocle at sunrise Wednesday.
Depending on sea conditions in the Strait of Sicily, another 200
migrants are scheduled to be transferred on Wednesday morning
with the ferry Sansovino.
The quarantine ship "Azzurra" is in the harbour of Lampedusa,
with 600 places available, but is blocked in the harbour due to
the rough sea.
It isn't clear whether it will be able to dock at Cala Pisana in
the coming hours.
The prefecture of Agrigento is coordinating all of the
operations and initiatives, together with law enforcement, to
face the emergency tied to the new wave of migrant landings on
the island.(ANSAmed).
