Life Senator and Holocaust survivor Liliana Segre is suing former ambassador to Sweden and Belgium Elena Basile after the ex-diplomat accused the Auschwitz suvivivor of only caring about Jewish children and allegedly ignoring the plight of Palestinian children.
In a video posted Tuesday, Basile, 64, says the 93-year-old Segre is "tormented only by the thought of Jewish children", adding "the Germans too were very nice to Nazi children, do you want to imitate them?" Segre's son Luciano Belli Paci said Wednesday "we are going forward with the libel suit" after getting an unsatisfactory answer from Basile who reportedly said she had been misquoted and urged journalists to correct their accounts of her statements.
Basile appears regularly on Italian TV where she is known for her controversial positions advocating the end of the Ukraine war.
Politicians of all stripes have voiced solidarity with Segre who denies not having sympathy for the children of Gaza, where Hamas says over 27,500 people including mainly women and children have been killed by the Israeli response to the brutal and unprecedented attack by the Islamist militants who killed some 1,200 and took about 150 hostage.
