Darmanin's saying France would not take migrants arriving at the
Italian island of Lampedusa may have been dictated by electoral
considerations and French President Emmanuel Macron's word was
what counts on the issue, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Monday.
"What Macron says goes, and what the foreign minister says, it
seems to me that there is a desire to cooperate", aid Tajani at
a press conference at the UN about Darmanin saying France would
not take in some of the migrants whose arrivals have surged to
produce an emergency at Lampedusa.
"There is an election campaign in France as well, but the issue
should not be tackled with campaign slogans in Italy as at the
European level," the minister added.
