Premier Giorgia Meloni on Thursday met
with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a group session
with leaders from Spain, Poland, Romania, Netherlands and
Sweden, after bilateral meetings with all leaders individually
were cancelled, apart from France and Germany, due to time
constraints at the extraordinary EU summit on migration in
Brussels.
Italy's group is the first of the 25 EU members excluding France
and Germany to meet the Ukrainian leader, who is at the summit
to ask for more military aid against the Russian invasion, and
specifically fighter jets to fend off an upcoming offensive by
Moscow.
Meloni earlier chided French President Emmanuel Macron for
setting up a meeting with Zelensky only featuring German
Chancellor Olaf Schulz in Paris Wednesday evening.
The Ukrainian leader earlier Wednesday saw British leaders and
asked them for fighter jets.
Meloni embraced Zelensky on his arrival in Brussels Thursday.
