The climate crisis will increasingly
damage the life of millions of people if we do not react now,
Pope Francis said on X, formerly Twitter, on Friday.
"At this historic moment we are being asked to take
responsibility for the legacy we will leave behind us after our
passage through this world," wrote the pope, who has been unable
to attend the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai as expected
due to a lung inflammation.
"If we do not react now, climate change will increasingly damage
the lives of millions of people. #COP28," he added on the
opening day of the conference.
Francis, who will be 87 on December 17, has made protecting the
environment a central theme of his pontificate and in 2015 he
issued the encyclical letter Laudato si' on care for our common
home.
