Pope Francis on Wednesday remembered
late Italian ambassador to Congo Luca Attanasio, slain in the
east of the country two years ago, as a a "sower of hope" in the
conflict-torn central African country.
Speaking with victims of violence in the eastern Kivu region
where Attanasio lost his life along with his Italian police
bodyguard and a World Food Programme driver on 22 February 2021,
Francis thanked and blessed "all the sowers of peace working in
the country".
"Some have lost their lives while serving peace, such as
Ambassador Luca Attanasio," the Pope recalled, "the carabiniere
Vittorio Iacovacci and the driver Mustapha Milambo, assassinated
two years ago in the east of the country.
"They were sowers of hope and their sacrifice will not be lost".
