The new secretariat of
economic affairs presided by Australian Cardinal George Pell
took up residence in the imposing St John's tower in the Vatican
City on Tuesday.
This is the first time the Medieval tower located on a
hilltop overlooking the Vatican gardens - until now used to
house popes, high-ranking prelates and their guests - has hosted
a 'ministry' of the Roman Curia, or government.
The secretariat of economic affairs is one of two new
entities created by Pope Francis in February as part of efforts
to clean up the scandal-tainted economic administration of the
Vatican.
The other is an economic council comprising a mix of lay
people and clerics whose task it is to guide the secretariat in
policymaking.
