Italian star Jannik Sinner is still
no 2 in the world despite controversially losing to eventual
champions Stefanos Tstitsipas of Greece in the semi-final of the
Monte -Carlo Open Saturday, only his second defeat of the
season.
The 22-year-old South Tyrolean, who has beaten record 24-time
time grand slam champ Novak Djokovic three times lately, is
still behind the Serbian GOAT and one spot ahead of the Spanish
phenom who downed him at Indian Wells, Carlos Alcaraz.
Tsitsipas is back in the top 10, at seven, after beating
Djokovic's semi conqueror Casper Ruud of Norway in the final in
Monaco.
Sinner suffered thigh twinges towards the end of his
three-setter against the Greek, which contributed to his defeat.
but there was also a huge blunder by umpire Aurelie Tourte, who
failed to see a double fault by Tsitsipas which would have given
Sinner a double break in the decisive set.
"It's hard to take, but it's not easy to be an umpire," said the
Italian with his usual good grace after the match.
