Sinisa Mihajlovic has died after a
long battle with cancer, the former soccer player and coach's
family said on Friday.
In a statement, the family said they were pained to announce the
"unjust, premature death" of an "exemplary husband, father, son
and brother".
The Serbian was 53.
A tough defender and midfielder with a thunderous free-kick, he
made 63 appearances and scored 10 goals for Yugoslavia/Serbia
and Montenegro between 1991 and 2003.
After playing for Vojvodina and Red Star Belgrade, he spent the
rest of his career in Italy, with stints at Roma, Sampdoria,
Lazio and Inter.
After hanging up his boots, he went into coaching first as
Roberto Mancini's assistant at Inter.
He had spells at many Serie A clubs and stint in charge of
Serbia between 2012 and 2013.
He was diagnosed with leukemia in 2019 and faced the illness
with remarkable courage, continuing as Bologna head coach as he
battled the cancer until he was dismissed in September.
Premier Giorgia Meloni was among the first to pay tribute to
Mihajlovic.
"You fought like a lion on the field and in life," Meloni said
via Twitter.
"You were an example and gave courage to many who found
themselves faced with the illness.
"The described you as an iron sergeant, you showed you have a
great heart.
"You are, and will always be a winner".
FIFA President Gianni Infantino also expressed sadness at the
news.
"I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Siniša
Mihajlović, one of Serbia's most celebrated footballers and
coaches," he said.
"On the pitch, his free-kicks embodied a passion and dedication
for the beauty of the game that left a lasting impression on the
world of sport and his death is a great loss to all of us.
"Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones
during this difficult time".
