Deputy Premier, Transport Minister
and rightwing League party leader Matteo Salvini said Friday
Italy would never ratify the treaty on the reformed European
Stability Mechanism, describing the Union's bailout fund as
"European madness".
Italy is the only EU member not to have ratified the new ESM,
and has been repeatedly urged to do so.
"The ESM is of no use to Italy, it is another European folly,"
Salvini said on the sidelines of the presentation of the FS
state railways security academy.
Asked if it will be ratified, he replied, "No, never, it's
another European folly.
"We don't need it".
Italy has said it is concerned about the ESM's impact on growth
and fiscal sovereignty.
