Premier Giorgia Meloni, the leader of
the right-wing Brothers of Italy (FdI) party, said Tuesday her
televised debate on May 23 before next month's European
elections with centre-left Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly
Schlein will help Italians choose who they want to elect for the
European Parliament, even though neither will take up their
seats if elected.
"I like debate, I think it's the salt of democracy, in
particular in an election campaign," Meloni told an event
organised by conservative daily La Verità in Milan.
"I really have to smile at the discussion over giving our
willingness to debate: complaints, denunciation...I think it is
normal, particularly in an electoral campaign like the one we
are in, with respect to the European Union, to tell Italians
that there are two models: the socialist and the conservative
proposals.
"Comparing recipes and visions is a way to help citizens in
their choice, it's the most natural thing in the world".
Meloni, and Schlein, have been accused of personalising politics
by leading their parties in the EP poll since they have no
intention of taking up their seats in Strasbourg.
