Premier Giorgia Meloni shrugged off
opposition Democratic Parrty (PD) claims that she has occupied
public broadcaster Rai and created Meloni-TV, saying the
centre-left party was simply "irked" because "PD-TV is no more".
Rai journalists have read statements claiming Meloni is trying
to make Rai a "megaphone" for the government.
"On Melon-TV Meloni is dramatically the last one on the list,"
she told an event organised by conservative daily La Verità, "I
don't accept these charges: there is no irritability because
there is Meloni-TV, but only because there is no longer PD-TV".
The government has been accused of putting placemen in key Rai
posts, as is the norm in Italy's spoils system, and driving out
several popular left-leaning figures.
