Schlein on Monday expressed satisfaction that the G7, under
Italy's duty presidency, stressed the need for de-escalation in
the Middle East in its condemnation of last weekend's attack by
Iran on Israel.
The leader of the opposition, centre-left group spoke to Premier
Giorgia Meloni on Sunday before the premier chaired a video
conference meeting of the G7 Heads of State and Government
during which a joint declaration "unequivocally" condemning the
attack was adopted.
"Yesterday there was a G7 meeting with a request for
de-escalation, which we consider important," Schlein told the
Foreign Press Association in Rome.
"Our request to the government is to do everything possible to
contribute to a ceasefire.
"We (Meloni and I) clash over everything in domestic politics,
but we dialogue on issues such as these.
"The PD has forcefully called for a ceasefire, for the release
of the hostages (held by Hamas) and for humanitarian aid to be
delivered since the beginning of this resurgence of conflict.
"It is important to find terrain for dialogue in international
politics".
