President Sergio Mattarella called for
an end to "unacceptable" insults against the disabled on social
media as he marked world disability day on Sunday.
"(There should be) no more insults to the disabled via social
networks, and no more superficiality about the suffering of
families," said Mattarella on the International Day of Persons
with Disabilities.
The president recalled that 17 years after the approval of the
United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities, "there are still numerous obstacles to the
exercise of fundamental rights in the social, political, labour
and economic spheres".
He stressed the importance of "the duty to recognise the
enormous value of those who take care of their loved ones,
inviting to change the perspective with which we look at
disability, overcoming prejudices and stereotypes."
