The ruling rightwing League party is to rally in Milan in defence of Western values after the Hamas attack on Israel in Milan on November 4, leader, Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini confirmed Friday.
In announcing the event Thursday, Salvini said it would also be in honour of late journalist Oriana Fallaci, who came out against Islamic extremists and Islam in general after 9/11, and in both writing and interviews warned that Europe was "too tolerant of Muslims".
On Friday Salvini said the demo would be against fanaticism in all its forms.
"That of Saturday 4 November in Milan will be a square open to all, peaceful, sunny, with an eye to the future," he said on social media.
"An occasion to reaffirm the importance of freedom and democracy, the fight against terrorism, anti-Semitism and Islamist fanaticism.
"The achievements and fundamental rights that characterise the West cannot be called into question.
"At a time of serious tensions, Italy has a duty to underline its place among democratic and free countries".
