The opposition Green party on
Wednesday announced a law proposal to establish a national park
in the area implicated in the construction of a road bridge
linking Sicily and Calabria across the Messina Strait in order
to block the project.
The party will present the bill to the media at a press
conference in the Lower House on Friday at 12 am.
The National Park of the Strait and Purple Coast is a "response
to the aberrant policies of (Transport and Infrastructure
Minister) Matteo Salvini and the construction of the bridge, a
useless and harmful work that will cost the country 15 billion
euro", a statement said.
"The bill to establish the National Park aims to preserve and
protect the area of the Strait of Messina and the Purple Coast,
ensuring that its natural, ecological, historical and cultural
wealth is preserved and enhanced for present and future
generations," the statement added.
The project to build a bridge linking the island region of
Sicily to mainland Italy has been on the cards for many years
but never enacted due to a combination of high costs,
environmental and safety concerns and fears of possible
infiltration by criminal organisations.
Salvini revived the plan soon after taking office last autumn,
pushed through a law paving the way for construction and said in
August that the foundation stone would be laid next year.
