Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has said that the government is set to approve measures to crack down on minors using weapons.
Piantedosi told daily newspaper Il Messaggero that the measures were needed to "guarantee more security in our cities" because, among other things, there are "young people who carry weapons and use them for futile motives, without any respect for other people's lives".
The minister also stressed that "police operations cannot be the only instrument of intervention," saying it was necessary to "offer new and better opportunities to young people" and provide responses in the "social, educational and culture spheres" as well as boosting the sporting facilities available to them.
Juvenile crime is high on the government's agenda after several recent cases that shocked the nation, including the rape of two cousins aged 10 and 12 in Caivano near Naples.
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister said Wednesday that Premier Giorgia Meloni's cabinet will examine measures to crack down on juvenile crime and youth gangs on Thursday.
He said the measures would increase controls and stiffen penalties.
