European intervention is needed to
prevent the deterioration of the international situation from
driving more and more migrants and refugees to Europe, Deputy
Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Sunday.
"The international situation is deteriorating, pushing people to
leave Africa and seek a place in Europe through the Balkan and
Mediterranean routes," Tajani told Rainews24.
"We are intervening to control the situation, but action is
needed from the EU, as requested by (President Sergio)
Mattarella, because the situation is objectively complicated,"
he added.
During a speech at the Meeting of Catholic movement Communion
and Liberation on Friday Mattarella called for "a concrete and
constant commitment from the European Union" in tackling
migration and "support for the
countries of origin of migratory flows".
"It must be realised that only adequate and sustainable regular
pathways for admission provide the means to end the cruel
trafficking of human beings," he said.
"Let's take what's happening in Tunisia, where thousands of
people are being stopped but even more are arriving," Tajani
told Rainews.
"A European strategy is needed throughout the African continent,
because there is the risk that more and more migrants will move
from the south towards the north," he said.
