Deputy Premier and Transport and
Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini has signed a letter
calling on unions to rethink the transport strikes they have
announced for the coming days, the ministry said Wednesday.
At the same time, Salvini has summoned employers and unions to
talks on Wednesday in a bid to reach an agreement to avert the
strikes, it said.
Italy's rail workers are set to strike on Thursday and
air-transport workers plan to down tools on Saturday.
On Tuesday League leader Salvini said he was hopeful of "finding
a positive solution for businesses and workers via dialogue",
adding: "I don't deny the possibility of a direct intervention
by the ministry".
Luigi Sbarra the leader of the CISL trade union, said Wednesday
that he saw little chance of the rail strike being called off.
Sbarra said that long-distance train services would not be
affected and regional services would be guaranteed in the
morning between 6am and 9am and in the evening between 6pm and
9pm.
