Premier Giorgia Meloni on Friday
dismissed suggestions that the situation has worsened on
approval of the long-delayed payment of the third tranche of
funding for Italy's massive post-Covid National Recovery and
Resilience Plan (NRRP).
"There is no worsening on the third installment of the NRRP,"
Meloni told reporters after the European Council in Brussels.
"The spoilers who seek to undermine our work are not hitting the
target. On the fourth (installment) work is ongoing and will
take a long time," she added.
The European Commission said Friday that it was still making
assessments for approval of payment of the third tranche,
amounting to 19 billion euros.
Payments are made by the EU on condition that agreed targets
have been met.
To date Italy has received nearly 67 billion euros in
low-interest loans and grants from the EU for the plan largely
in support of the ecological transition and technological
innovation.
Rome is in talks with Brussels on possible changes to the NRRP,
amid fears it will not be possible to complete all the related
projects by the final deadline of 2026.
