Former Lower House Speaker Irene
Pivetti was sent to trial in Milan Tuesday on charges of tax
evasion and self-laundering for a series of business
transactions, in particular the purchase and sale of three
Ferrari Granturismo cars that were allegedly used to launder
proceeds from tax offences.
Pivetti, formerly of the rightwing Northern League (now just
League), turns 60 on April 4.
She was Speaker of the House from 1994 to 1996, the youngest
ever to hold the office, at the age of 31.
After leaving politics, she started a career in television, like
her sister Veronica, a popular TV and film actress.
Also on trial are five other people, including former rally
driver Leo Isolani.
The trial will open on 13 June.
