Premier Mario Draghi and Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio travelled to Algeria on Monday to sign an agreement on gas supplies as Italy seeks to end its reliance on Russia gas following Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.
Di Maio said the deal will make it possible to address eventual "Russian blackmail over gas".
Draghi had talks with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune while Claudio Descalzi, CEO of Italian energy giant Eni, held talks with his opposite number at Algeria's Sonatrach ahead of inking a supply deal.
On Sunday Rome described Russia's demands for payments of gas supplies to be made in roubles as "unacceptable".
