Italy sees the "irreplaceable" role
of the European Parliament, President Sergio Mattarella said in
a message to new EP President Roberta Metsola of Malta, who has
replaced Italy's David Sassoli who died last week aged 65.
"Italy looks with unchanged trust to the central, irreplaceable
role that the Strasbourg Assembly plays in the process of
continental integration," Mattarella said in his message to
the43-year-old European People's Party (EPP) MEP.
"The apex of European political debate, under your lead the
parliament, I am certain, will continue to wotk so that the
highest common ideals find concrete applications in the service
of the EU's citizens.
"In this spirit, and in memory of the sadly missed president
Sassoli, I renew my cordial congratulations and I wish you a
happy birthday.".
