Italian Olympic Committee CONI has approved a joint bid by Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, the governors of the respective regions, Lombardy and Veneto, said on Monday. Lombardy and Veneto announced last month that they intended to press ahead after the central government said that the idea of a three-way bid, also featuring Turin, was dead due to differences between the cities. "CONI has made it official that the Italian bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics will be Milan-Cortina," Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana said during a meeting of his regional executive.
Veneto Governor Luca Zaia confirmed this. "This morning I spoke to CONI President (Giovanni) Malagò, who officially told me that he has signed the document for the Milan-Cortina bid for the 2026 Olympics on snow," Zaia told ANSA. "Obviously, we are really happy about this decision".
