Italian President
Sergio Mattarella highlighted the "dark side of the web" on
Monday when referring to the death of a 14-year-old who hanged
himself in his bedroom after viewing an online video on
self-asphyxiation as a way to get high.
Mattarella's comments came at a speech opening the school
year in Portoferrario, on the island of Elba.
"Digital connections are great windows open on the world, and
on our times, but there also exists a dark side of the web,"
Mattarella said.
"It's not acceptable that a 14-year-old boy dies as a
consequence of emulating a perverse game online," he said.
