Austria has pulled back from
opening its consulates abroad to German and Ladin speakers from
the autonomous northern Italian province of Alto Adige-South
Tyrol.
The relevant bill has been withdrawn, Foreign Minister
Angelino Alfano said Thursday.
According to the bill that Chancellor Sebastian Kurz's
government sent to parliament, German and Ladin speakers from
Alto Adige would have been able turn to Austrian consulates if
they needed assistance abroad, even if there were Italian
representation in that country.
Vienna recent caused controversy with its proposal to give
Austrian passports to German and Ladin speakers in Alto
Adige, in addition to their Italian citizenship.
Rome has rejected the idea.
