Luigi Di Maio, a leading MP for
the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) and the Deputy
Lower House Speaker, said Tuesday that the M5S wants new
elections as soon as possible under a "corrected" version of the
Italicum election law.
Matteo Renzi is set to resign as premier after the
government's flagship Constitutional reform was rejected in a
referendum on Sunday.
The Italicum system is designed only to apply to the Lower
House as, under the reform rejected on Sunday, the Senate was
meant to be revamped and made up of regional representatives.
Furthermore, the Constitutional Court is set to rule on the
legitimacy of the Italicum, with a hearing set for January 24.
"It's a lightning solution to have elections straight away,"
Di Maio said when asked about the idea of changing the Italicum
so it applies to the Senate too.
"We'll see who is up for that. It depends how many Renzi
supporters are left.
"This is the solution that we'll take to (crisis
consultations) with the head of State.
"All you need is a five-line correction to take the Italicum
to the Senate".
