With the arrival of warm weather
and the closure of the Balkan Route southern Europe "risks
becoming open-air refugee camps", the president of Doctors
Without Borders (MSF), Loris De Filippi, said Tuesday. He said
MSF would do its utmost to help migrants and refugees in the
central Mediterranean. "I think Europe has made a cynical but
very obtuse calculation" in blocking off the Balkan Route, he
said, warning that France would soon follow Austria in closing
off its border with Italy. MSF has decided to put to sea again,
De Filippi said, "because the number of ships carrying out
rescues appears insufficient". He said "we will be at sea for
three months and then we will assess whether to continue".
