The Libyan embassy in Rome on
Friday thanked Italy for its efforts in saving and receiving
migrants who "manage to reach Italian coasts".
It voiced "deep condolences for the huge tragedy" of April
19, when more than 700 migrants drowned off its coasts.
Libya supports "the efforts of the Italian government and
the EU to seek solutions and remedies...that are more rooted in
the countries of origin," the embassy said in a note.
"Any action must be taken under the aegis of the United
Nations, and it must reflect the international community's moral
and humanitarian responsibility over time," it added.
Solutions "based (solely) on notions of security are of
limited effectiveness and go against a moral vision for the
solution to this phenomenon".
