Forza Italia (FI) MEP Raffaele
Fitto said Friday not voting for the next president of Italy is
not an option, because it would reflect "a South American
attitude".
"We have already clearly stated that the option of not
participating in the vote simply doesn't exist," said Fitto.
"That would be a South American attitude and one that is
not normal," he added.
Fitto is a one-time confidant of Berlusconi who now leads
a dissenting minority within FI that is not happy with the fact
that the media mogul has sealed a pact on electoral law reform
with centre-left Premier Matteo Renzi.
FI has said it won't back Renzi's presidential candidate
Sergio Mattarella, casting blank ballots in the fourth round of
voting Saturday.
