A draft of a new anti-corruption plan for the City of Rome suggests rotating executives regularly through departments, stiffening procurement rules, and strengthening the office aimed at fighting internal wrongdoing, officials said Friday.
Mayor Ignazio Marino hailed the plan as "extremely important" as the historic Italian capital works to recover from a major scandal involving the deep infiltration of a mafia organization into million of euros in city contracts.
Commissioner Alfonso Sabella said that as the plan is refined, unions will have input, adding that it is expected employees will keep an eye open for suspicious activities, reporting anything that seems out of line. "Employees are public servants and their obligation is already there," to report wrongdoing, he said.
The plan foresees greater strengthening of the anti-corruption office, which now employs just four people.
