Premier Matteo Renzi's cabinet
on Wednesday agreed to extend the contracts of temporary staff
working for provincial governments throughout the country, Civil
Service Minister Marianna Madia said.
Provincial workers in many cities have been staging
protests over fears that spending cuts combined with plans to
scrap the provincial layer of government would lead to thousands
of job losses.
"Cabinet extends contracts of precarious workers of the
provinces," Madia wrote on Twitter. "No one loses their job and
better service is given to citizens".
