The Intangible Heritage Committee of
the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) on Wednesday proclaimed the art of Italian
opera singing to be part of the intangible heritage of humanity.
The decision came at a meeting of the Committee's member
countries in Botswana.
In March 2022 Italy's UNESCO commission chaired by Franco
Bernabe' approved a bid by Italian opera to go forward as
candidate to present to the UNESCO intergovernmental committee
for the 2023 cycle.
Then culture minister Dario Franceschini said that with the
opera bid "Italy is aiming for the recognition of one of its
most authentic and original cultural expressions".
