Italian rock sensation Maneskin said they "got carried away" after smashing their instruments after the last date of their sold-out US tour in Los Vegas at the weekend.
The Roman rockers, who won Sanremo and Eurovision before taking the US by storm last year, said they had not planned to do an imitation of The Who.
The quartet - Damiano David, Ethan Torchio, Thomas Raggi and Victoria De Angelis - who came second in the X-Factor Italy in 2017 and last month won an American Music Award in the favourite rock song category for their mega-hit Beggin', said on Instagram: "So this wasn't at all planned and maybe it went a bit too far… but we loved it! Chaos and destruction in Las Vegas aside, our North American journey just came to an end and we're already missing every bit of it. We couldn't be happier about the time we spent with you and the love you showed us!! The energy you brought on every single gig made this tour just MEMORABLE.
Counting the days 'till we come back. LOVE U, THANK U!!!" Some fans, however, didn't take kindly to their faves' destructive antics, posting on social media that the band had "done an anachronistic gesture", motivated by "stupid exhibitionism", forgetting their humble origins as buskers in the streets of Rome and "giving a slap in the face to people who can't afford to buy an instrument".
Maneskin recently got their first ever Grammy nomination, as best new artist.
The announcement for the February 3 ceremony came amid a magic moment for Damiano, Victoria, Thomas and Ethan, their first US tour.
The band's new album RUSH! is due out on January 20.
The Italian rock sensations hit the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May for the premiere of the Baz Lurhmann movie on Elvis and his manager Colonel Tom Parker, for which they perform the song If I Can Dream.
The Roman quartet, who have conquered America since winning Eurovision last year and who appeared for the second time on the Jimmy Fallon Show two nights before Cannes, went to Memphis to soak up some of the King's vibes before arranging and singing the track.
They were voted best group at last year's MTV Europe Music Awards.
