Authorities in the Marche regional
capital of Ancona have lifted the lid on a nationwide tax fraud
worth nearly two billion euro, judicial sources said on
Thursday.
Finance police coordinated by the Ancona Public Prosecutor's
Office have discovered 140 phantom firms and seized 350 million
euro in assets in an operation named 'Fast & Clean'.
On Thursday officers carried out more than 30 searches in the
provinces of Milan, Varese, Brescia, Monza, Padua and Ragusa.
In total, 85 people are under investigation on suspicion of tax
fraud in relation to false invoices worth 1.7 billion euro.
Investigators claim thousands of companies did not pay taxes and
transferred the money abroad.
