A court in the northern city of Asti
on Monday sentenced a jeweller to 17 years in prison for killing
two robbers who tried to hold up his shop in April 2021 and for
injuring a third bandit.
Mario Roggero was found guilty of the homicides of Giuseppe
Mazzarino, 58, and Andrea Spinelli, 44, and the attempted
homicide of Alessandro Modica.
The latter managed to get away despite suffering an injury to
the leg in the robbery at the shop in the province of Cuneo town
of La Morra. He was arrested hours later.
The prosecutor had requested a 14--year term for Roggero, who is
68.
"The word defence jars with the video (of the shooting), in
which we saw an execution," the prosecutor had said when making
a request for a conviction.
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini expressed
"solidarity" for Roggero.
"He defended his life and his business," Salvini said.
"The real criminals are the ones who deserve prison".
