President Sergio Mattarella on Friday
promulgated a bill into law featuring a ban on lab-grown meat
allowing the government to send it to the EU.
The Government forwarded the measure accompanied by a letter
informing that the draft law had been notified to the European
Commission and undertaking to comply with any observations that
might be made by the Commission within the framework of the
notification procedure.
The law presented by the ruling coalition bans the production,
distribution and sale of cultivated meat here.
Cultivated meat is grown from animal-tissue cells in a
laboratory, meaning that animals do not have to be slaughtered
to produce it.
The ruling coalition has said the ban is needed to safeguard the
public from potential health risks and protect Italy's livestock
industry and its traditional cuisine.
