The mayor of the famed Italian ski
resort Cervinia on Thursday said moves were afoot to restore its
name after it was changed to Le Breuil earlier this year.
Elisa Cicco told ANSA the process was underway at the end of a
meeting with the president of the Valle d'Aosta Region, Renzo
Testolin, convened to resolve the problem of the new, and
former, French name, which was changed to Cervinia amid Fascist
Italianization of place names near the French and Austrian
borders in the 1930s.
"The process concerns the modification of the current toponym.
We will send the request for the name change to the Region," she
said.
The change back to Le Breuil spurred ire from the rightwing
party of Premier Giorgia Meloni, Brothers of Italy (FdI), which
said it smacked of the Taliban and was anti-Italian.
