Deputy Premier and Transport and
Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini on Wednesday announced
that 500 million euro are to be spent on improving safety at
level crossings after a train collided with a truck on the
tracks in Calabria on Tuesday night leaving two people - the
train driver and the truck driver - dead.
Salvini said as soon as he learned of the accident in Corigliano
Rossano near Cosenza he "called the CEO of (Italian rail
operator) RFI to get the latest news".
"It is not possible to die with a red light and the bars down
because there is a truck in the middle," he continued.
"RFI will soon be investing and putting out to tender 500
million for safety systems on level crossings," said Salvini.
Unions representing fail workers have announced an 8-hour strike
on Thursday from 9 am to 5 pm to protest against "the fragility
of an infrastructure system that has once again proved to be
inadequate for users and workers".
