Asylum seekers hosted at a migrant reception centre in Sesto Fiorentino are among the volunteers helping to clean up after flooding triggered by extreme bad weather hit the region last Thursday.
Every day since Saturday 20 young people from Bangladesh, Egypt, Gambia, Sudan, Ivory Coast and Cameroon have made the 13 km journey from the centre run by the Caritas Solidarity Foundation to Campi Bisenzio, one of the municipalities worst affected by the flooding, to help free the streets, homes, pubic buildings, and gardens from mud.
"We are moved by the spirit of generosity that the guests of the Sesto Fiorentino reception centre have shown towards the citizens of the plane affected by the flood," said Caritas Solidarity Foundation president Vincenzo Lucchetti.
"It is a beautiful example of solidarity and mutual altruism, a way for the guests of the centre to make themselves useful, to come into contact with society, to make acquaintances - a step forward in their path of reception and integration," he added.
In total seven people died in last week's flooding in Tuscany, which is also estimated to have caused at least half a billion euro in damage to public and private property.
