The government of Premier Giorgia
Meloni is planning to make postpartum assistance available to
new mothers for up to six months after childbirth starting in
2024, ANSA has learned.
Under the scheme, the new so-called 'maternal assistants' will
provide direct one-to-one support to mothers along the lines of
the postpartum midwifery care provided in other countries
through telephone and video calls and home visits, according to
the sources, which added that 100-150 million euros could be
allocated to the scheme.
The proposal could be referenced in the government's update to
its spring DEF economic and financial blueprint, the NADEF,
which is set to be examined during a cabinet meeting later on
Wednesday and is slated to come before the Lower House starting
October 11.
