Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida on Tuesday announced additional funding worth 10 million euros as a support measure for product loss and to shore up mussel and clam farms against the invasion of blue crabs in the north Adriatic.
The funding comes on top of a existing allocation of 2.9 million euros.
The minister also announced measures to simplify access to compensation for those whose livelihoods have been affected by the invasion that is said to be wrecking havoc on the local economies in Veneto and Emilia Romagna, the possibility of trawling within three miles of the coast, and constant dialogue with associations.
"We need people in Rome to understand that this disaster is putting at risk the lives of thousands of families and businesses," said Emilia Romagna Governor Stefano Bonaccini in August.
"And its risks destroying an economy which not only provides a livelihood for a community, but which is an Italian and European excellence, together with other identity products of this region like Parma ham or Parmigiano".
Veneto, to the north, has already declared war on blue crabs, which are reportedly wrecking havoc on the local clam population in the Po delta area.
