Initial investigations into the rail
disaster on the Milan-Turin line that left five workmen dead
late on Wednesday night have revealed serious violations of
safety rules, prosecutors said on Friday.
"The initial investigations show serious breaches of safety
procedures at the time of the accident," said chief prosecutor
in Ivrea, Gabriella Viglione.
"There are profiles of responsibility for which some people will
soon be placed under investigation," she added.
The Public Prosecutor's Office is not ruling out the possibility
of malicious intent in relation to the suspected crimes of
murder and disaster.
The victims are Saverio Giuseppe Lombardo, Michael Zanera, Kevin
Lagana', Giuseppe Aversa and Giuseppe Sorvillo lost their lives
after being hit by a fast-moving regional train while working on
a stretch of track near Brandizzo station in the province of
Turin.
On Thursday President Sergio Mattarella described deaths at work
as an "affront to civil coexistence" and Premier Giorgia Meloni
called for full light to be shed on the circumstances of the
incident.
Brandizzo Mayor Paolo Bodoni suggested an error of communication
may have been to blame.
