Europe's fleet of Canadair
fireflighting planes is insufficient and needs to be boosted,
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci said Tuesday evening as
firefighters continued to battle wildfires in several parts of
southern Italy, especially Sicily.
"I would like to make an appeal to Brussels, but we will
formalise it tomorrow: Europe's Canadair fleet is absolutely
insufficient," the minister told TG1 on Rai1.
"We cannot plead for an amphibious aircraft to arrive every
time. We need to strengthen the European fleet," he added.
Wildfires were still burning on Wednesday morning in Sicily in
the hills around Palermo and Catania and in Puglia around Vieste
and in the Salento area.
